Legal Counsel - Employee Relations

Legal Counsel- Employee Relations, will partner closely with IXOM’s People & Culture (“P&C”) function to deliver legal and strategic advice across a broad range of employment and industrial relations matters. This role will take carriage of matters from end-to-end, ensuring that IXOM complies with its legal obligations.
The position reports to the General Counsel and Company Secretary, with a dotted line to the Chief People & Culture Officer and will be is a key member of the legal team.
Your responsibilities
- Provide authoritative legal advice to P&C Business Partners and senior leaders on all aspects of employment law, industrial relations, and workplace compliance, including Awards, Enterprise Agreements, NES, and labour legislation.
- Represent IXOM in regulatory proceedings and tribunals, managing matters from initiation to resolution.
- Lead enterprise bargaining negotiations, including drafting, lodgement, and registration of Enterprise/Collective Agreements.
- Advise on employment law implications of mergers, acquisitions, divestments, and restructures, ensuring risk mitigation and compliance.
- Oversee the development and implementation of people-related policies aligned with evolving legislation and IXOM’s strategic objectives.
- Design and deliver legal training for business leaders on employment risks across the employee lifecycle.
- Ensure global employment practices meet local legal requirements and international standards.
- Collaborate with the broader Corporate Legal team on cross-functional legal matters and provide ad-hoc legal support as required.
Your skills & experience
- Must have Bachelor of Laws. Current Australian practising certificate with a focus on employment/IR.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in employment law or industrial relations, ideally in-house within a complex, matrixed organisation.
- Exposure to New Zealand employment relations is highly regarded.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and influence across all levels of the business.
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver under pressure with professionalism and resilience.
- High standards of integrity, discretion, and confidentiality.
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with a reputation as a trusted advisor.
- Collaborative, values-driven approach with a strong customer and employee experience mindset.
- Awareness of external legal and HR best practices and trends.
