SHE Advisor - Operations
East Melbourne, VIC, AU, 3002
Influence how IXOM manages its most significant safety and process risks
Looking for a safety role that goes beyond routine compliance and day-to-day site HSE?
We’re looking for an experienced SHE Advisor – Operations to join our Group Safety, Health & Environment team, based at our Melbourne Head Office. This is a specialist role working across complex personal and process safety risk, with a significant focus on Major Hazard Facilities (MHFs), regulatory programs and critical risk management across IXOM’s Australian and New Zealand operations.
Rather than managing the everyday safety activities of one site, you’ll facilitate major risk programs, coach operational teams and provide specialist advice and assurance to help ensure our most significant risks are understood and effectively controlled.
About your role
You’ll act as an important link between IXOM’s operational sites and our SHE Management System, helping operations interpret and apply safety and risk frameworks while providing specialist advice, facilitation and assurance.
A significant proportion of the role is focused on planned Major Hazard Facility review-and-revise programs and regulatory submissions. Your work could range from facilitating risk and safety assessments and supporting control management activities through to completing workshop follow-up, preparing and contributing to Safety Cases and helping sites demonstrate their licence to operate.
You’ll also provide targeted support when sites encounter more complex safety, process or implementation challenges. Importantly, this role isn’t about doing safety for our sites. You’ll coach operational teams to own their risks while providing the specialist expertise and constructive challenge needed to ensure the right outcomes are achieved.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate and quality-assure complex risk assessments, including HAZID, HAZOP, Bowtie and LOPA.
- Support MHF Safety Cases, review-and-revise programs and regulatory submissions.
- Support critical control management and Management of Change activities relating to SHE and major incident risk.
- Coach site leaders and operational teams to effectively interpret and apply IXOM’s SHE Management System.
- Support regulatory inspections, audits and responses to findings or notices.
- Support or lead higher-risk incident investigations using approaches including Learning Teams, ICAM and Root Cause Analysis.
- Identify gaps or ineffective controls and work with stakeholders to strengthen risk management outcomes.
- Provide specialist support across emerging safety, regulatory and operational risks throughout the ANZ network.
Who are we looking for?
You’ll be an experienced safety or risk professional who can operate confidently across complex personal and process safety risks, with the critical thinking and technical judgement to recognise when an outcome or control doesn’t adequately address the risk.
You’ll bring:
- Previous experience in SHE, process safety, operational risk or a comparable discipline.
- Strong understanding of complex risk, including low-frequency, high-consequence scenarios, rather than experience limited to task-level safety assessments.
- Experience facilitating or contributing to recognised risk methodologies, ideally including HAZID, HAZOP, Bowtie or LOPA.
- Strong facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills, with the confidence to challenge and influence operational leaders.
- Sound judgement and prioritisation skills, including knowing when to challenge, escalate a risk or redirect an issue.
- Adaptability and the ability to make progress when information, priorities or requirements are evolving.
- A tertiary qualification in OHS, Engineering, Science, Process Safety, Risk Management or a related discipline is preferred.
- Experience within a Major Hazard Facility, chemicals, hazardous materials, oil & gas or another high-risk industry.
- Direct MHF experience will put you on the front foot, but strong transferable complex-risk and process-safety experience is equally valuable.
Benefits at IXOM
- Competitive salary aligned to market and experience
- Stable, full‑time role within a global organisation
- Structured onboarding and transition support
- Clear internal career pathways
- Flexible working arrangements where possible
- Health, wellbeing and employee assistance programs
- An inclusive, collaborative and values‑driven culture
Location and travel
Based at our Melbourne Head Office, you’ll work closely with the wider SHE team while regularly travelling to operational sites across Australia and potentially New Zealand.
Travel is driven by MHF programs and operational requirements rather than a fixed schedule. Some periods may involve monthly travel, while active regulatory programs can require more frequent site visits.
To Apply
If you’re an experienced safety or risk professional who enjoys tackling complex problems, facilitating meaningful risk discussions and helping operational teams strengthen their management of critical risks, we’d love to hear from you.
